My passion for painting Detroit images began while attending CCS. Each day driving from my suburban home to the city I realized it wasn’t just the personal history I had with Detroit, I was drawn to the city’s energy from a cultural and historical sense. Initially, the bright colorful images I painted of the city of allowed me to satisfy my passion for painting and at the same time indulge in the process. Along the way my paintings have evolved into messages regarding the city’s image. Today there is undeniable conflict over the city of Detroit; for some it is seen as a place for opportunity and growth and for others it is avoided, feared, and simply a city with an industry of the past. My recent paintings are a remark on the city of Detroit’s perceived image. For many, each painted image of the city is beautiful, yet the city itself is not held in the same regard. The voices of the media echo into hearsay, opinions are formed and we search for the truth which may lie somewhere in between.
