Cristina Joya is a ceramic artist whose vessels and sculptural forms investigate how inner experience becomes material, giving shape to presence, absence, interior space, and material memory.
About
Cristina Joya is a Mexican-born graphic designer and ceramic artist based in Detroit, Michigan. Raised in Guanajuato, Mexico, her work emerges from an ongoing exploration of the relationship between inner experience and material form. Working primarily with hand-built stoneware, she creates sculptural ceramic objects that investigate interior space, presence, and the tension between containment and absence. Her practice is informed by an interest in somatic perception, the body’s relationship to material processes, and the ways physical form can register psychological and emotional states. Through repetitive gestures and tactile surfaces, her work allows clay to record pressure, time, and movement. Joya’s recent work focuses on forms organized around interior voids, where absence becomes the structural core of the object.
Artist Statement
My work explores what becomes visible when inner processes refuse to remain internal. I use ceramic form as a site where experience enters material existence. I am interested in the gap between what can be integrated mentally and what insists on becoming real. Clay attracts me because it resists disappearance. Unlike thoughts or emotions, it records pressure, time, hesitation, and error. I am drawn to this contradiction: a desire for transience confronted by a material that refuses to forget. The fired object becomes a witness; not symbolic, but undeniable. Rather than functioning as containers, the forms operate as bodies that hold tension already lived yet still active. My recent works are organized around interior voids, where absence becomes the structural center and the surrounding material reveals the traces of its formation.
