The Detroit Artists Market (DAM) is proud to celebrate long-time friend and Italian American artist, Sergio De Giusti, in his solo exhibition, Tenebroso. The Public Opening reception will be Friday, September 10, 2010 from 6pm – 10pm. DAM will also host a Gallery Talk on Saturday, October 2nd, 2-4 p.m. with Sergio De Giusti. De Giusti, best known for his figurative bas reliefs and sculptures, will display new artwork created over the past year. The exhibit is a collection of charcoal drawings, reliefs, bronze sculptures and watercolors. The title of the show, Tenebroso, is an Italian reference to the shrouding of his images in darkness. His strong Italian influence is evident in his themes of cloaked subjects and landscapes, sacred symbols, and Baroque mannerisms.

The Detroit Artists Market brings back THAT DAM BOX SHOW this summer for an auction you won’t want to miss! Nearly 300 local artists were given old film reel boxes, donated by Wayne State University Library Systems, to create original works of art. These boxes will be on display and silent auction beginning Tuesday, August 10th. Be sure to see the show and find your favorite works prior to the final day - the show closes with a Final Bidding Reception on Friday, August 20th from 6-9pm. Bidding will be fast and furious that evening, and the bidding closes at 8:45pm sharp! All auction proceeds benefit the mission and programs of the Detroit Artists Market.

Gary Schwartz is an award-winning animator, director, artist, filmmaker and teacher. He has taught animation throughout the country and in Europe. Through his company, Single Frame Films, Gary has produced, designed and directed animation for Disney, Sesame Street, MTV, Fox Television, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and others.

Opening Friday, June 25, 2010, DAM will host a Public Opening and reception that evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Gallery visitors can meet the artists – and will have an opportunity to view and purchase the wide array of paintings, sculptures, photography, and mixed media on exhibit.
This year’s summer exhibition at the Detroit Artists Market was curated by Jack O. Summers, artist and educator. contemporary art by 25 Michigan artists. “Wordage” Exhibition runs through July 24, 2010.

DAM’s Elements Gallery features artist Ryan Asplund. In contrast to the contemporary styles of works in the main gallery, Mr. Asplund’s art directly reaches back into the past. He will present a gallery talk from 2 to 4 PM on Saturday, June 26, 2010, discussing his work in creating illuminated manuscript art.

The Detroit Artists Market proudly presents its 2010 Annual Detroit Artists Market Scholarship and Exhibition Program that includes the presentation of the scholarship awards to outstanding Wayne State University art students. The DAM exhibition will open with a public reception with the artists on Friday, March 12th from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition runs through April 17, 2010. The exhibition at Detroit Artists Market (DAM) will present the juried works of the three scholarship recipients along with the six other student finalists. Many distinguished alumni and faculty will, by invitation, also exhibit their work in this Scholarship Exhibition.

Detroit Artists Market begins the 2009-10 exhibition season with “LANDSCAPE: A Modern Sequel ”. The focus in this exhibition is to bring together a group of artists who interpret the landscape genre in a unique and individual manner. Featuring work by Yoriko Cronin, Andrew Krieger, Nicole Macdonald, Catherine Peet, George Rahme, Corine Smith.

The Detroit Artists Market presents its first summer show, “From a Different Perspective”, from June 26th to July 25th. The opening reception is on Friday, June 26th, from 6-9 pm.
The show features six regional artists who work outside of the traditional forms of painting, sculpture, and drawings. Their subject matter and style derives from comic book illustration, the surreal, alternative culture, and assemblage. The works are often edgy and have some sense of humor, from droll and understated, to the more outrageous and obvious.

This year’s exhibition and scholarship program commemorates the contributions of the world renowned College for Creative Studies and the DAM.

Each year in January, Detroit turns its attention to design and creativity. In 2009 the Detroit Artists Market will take its own look at design with the DAM Design Show. This show will look at the entire creative process from concept to design to creation of an artistic and functional piece. Ten designers will take on this process in creating “Chair”. The show will exhibit pieces from their creative process, including concept sketches, scale models, and the finished piece. The DAM Design Show will provide an intimate look into how design “happens”, and results in unique functional pieces. Following the DAM Design Show, these chairs will be shown at Mezzanine, February 4-15, 2009.
In addition to the chair designers, DAM will showcase jewelry designers, whose work will be featured in a special fashion show during the opening ticketed event. Concept and production pieces will be shown through the run of the show.

Varying in subject matter and mediums, a common thread that ties the works together is a raw sensibility, inward expression and passion, which bind artists from Art Brut, Outsider Art, and contemporary mainstream artists.

“The Market Presents: John Hegarty and Tom Parish Revisited” is a special feature of the Detroit Artists Market 75th Anniversary season. It honors two artists who are still actively listening to their muses. Both embody the soul of Detroit’s art culture. It also gives DAM an opportunity to remember and honor Mary Denison , who in 1982 began her tenure as DAM’s first full time Art Director. A catalog will document the exhibition. The original version of this show was the second in a series Ms. Denison initiated to recognize mature artists of stature in the community who had no local venue for their art.

This year’s exhibition and scholarship program commemorates the contributions of the world renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art and the DAM, both of which have recently celebrated their 75th anniversaries. The student finalists of the John F. Korachis Scholarship Awards were chosen by the DAM scholarship and exhibition committee. The selection process began with an open invitation to Cranbrook graduate students and was concluded with individual studio visits and interviews with the finalists. After lengthy deliberations, the recipients of the awards and scholarships were finally chosen for their originality, dedication and exceptional art work.
