Multifaceted Narratives: An Exploration of Black Figurative Art

Online Exhibit Archive

Multifaceted Narratives is a multimedia exhibition that features Black figurative works by Black artists based in Detroit. This exhibition seeks to present many examples of the complexity of Black narratives. As there is no singular representation of the experiences of Black people, Black art by Black artists is more often revelatory of personal experiences of individual Black people. Regardless of how the body is formed in a work of art, when Black artists create Black figures, there is always an underlying element of Black identity. In many cases, self-defined identification is apparent and necessary in Black art. Overall, this exhibition presents the literal and figurative taking up of space in the gallery and the art-historical cannon. Curated by Juana Williams.
